FUNDAMENTALS OF ECONOMICS I, II
This module is focussed on fundamental micro economic principles and theories required for further studies of economic. Through this module students master the following micro economic issues: supply and demand of the markets and products; expenditure and production analyses; perfect and imperfect competition; factor markets and income distribution; the role of government in economy; as well as environmental economics.
FUNDAMENTALS OF MANAGEMENT, II
Through this module students master fundamentals of management and learn the significance of its application on all segments in society, especially in economy. This module also includes basic functions of management: PLANNING (The purpose and nature of planning; Types of plans; Planning steps; The International Context of Management; Objectives; Strategies and policies; Decision- making); ORGANISATION (The nature of organisation and business; Formal and informal organisation; Organisational levels and the scope of management; etc.); HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT(Recruitment & Selection, Evaluating human resources development strategy and results; Managing change- manager and organisation development) LEADERSHIP ( Human factor and motivation; Leadership; Boards and group decision-making; Communication), CONTROLLING ( Controlling- system and procedure; Controlling methods; etc.)
ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE I, II
The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the function and significance of accounting and finance in accomplishing business goals for profit as well as non-profit organisations. Students are presented with fundamentals of bookkeeping, systems of internal controls, error and fraud risks, basic accountancy premises, and formatting of financial accounts that are the foundation of financial statements as well as annual financial reports. Additionally, students are introduced to specifics of financial monitoring in the tourism sector, and they acquire knowledge of analytical determiners significant for accurate interpretation of financial situations, business results, cash flow, and changes in capital as shown on financial statements.
ECONOMIC AND TOURISM GEOGRAPHY
Students are first introduced to the terms of economic and tourism geography, as well as the relationship between tourism, natural, cultural, and social environment. The course continuous with an overview of the role of tourism within the national economy; major tourist regions of Croatia, Europe, and selected parts of the world are studied in particular. Natural and geographic characteristics of particular regions of the world and countries are introduced, yet the primary focus of the course is on the economic aspects. Within the framework of the geography of tourism, emphasis is placed on describing the major forms of tourist movements, types of tourism, and major tourist destinations and attractions.
OFFICE SOFTWARE
This course enables students to gain basic knowledge of how to use a PC, Windows operating system, and software tools required for office applications. The programme is divided into five parts: Windows, Word, Outlook/ Windows Explorer, PowerPoint, and Excel. This is a practical course - all computer applications are learned directly on a PC in the computer lab, equipped with one PC for each student. Activities and practical examples are taken from the everyday practice of tourist companies and organizations.
BUSINESS MATHEMATICS
The aim of this subject is to familiarise students with the fundamental methods of business mathematics, as well as with the ground rules of differential calculus and its application in economy. The emphasis is on the problem- solving tasks that demonstrate the application of mathematics in everyday life. The syllabus includes the following topics: ratio; percentages; functions; simple and complex interest accounts; loans; basics of differential calculus.
INTRODUCTION TO TOURISM
The subject introduces students to the phenomenon of modern tourism and defines some fundamental concepts that students are going to encounter during their studies. It provides the history of tourism, introduces specific types of modern tourism, tourist destination and its attractions, as well as the attributes of its consumers, their motives, and needs that are crucial to their decisions about tourist travel. Interaction of tourism and the environment is observed, as well as interaction of social environment and culture, in order to indicate the positive, as well as negative, impact of tourism development. The subject also covers the most important factors in tourism development, such as transportation, accommodation, and food. The functions and tasks of tourist agencies and tour operators are introduced. Tourism is observed within the framework of global economic development (employment, impact on GDP, investments). The planning of tourism development and importance of marketing within tourism is introduced and its concept and process explained.
BUSINESS CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION
This module is a crucial part of the managerial alphabet. It consists of the following units: the communication system, communication within an organisation, visual communication, tourist communication, managerial communication, communication and human resources, and culture of business communication.
CROATIAN IN BUSINESS CORRESPONDENCE
The aim of this module is to offer fundamental understanding of business correspondence with the emphasis on orthographic and formal standards within standardised Croatian language. The module familiarises the students with formal language and the rules of creating business letters (applications, offers, memos, invitations, greeting letters, requests, reference letters, everyday business transactions, circular letters, letters for tourism and hospitality industry, e-mail and compositions relating to education).
ENGLISH LANGUAGE I, II
The knowledge of foreign languages is an important aspect of working within tourism sector. The classes follow and complement the topics introduced at other modules. The syllabus is adapted for the needs of future managers in tourism and it includes language, communication, cultural elements, comparison and transfer of knowledge from native to foreign language. Students revise, learn and practice language structures, skills and vocabulary that will be required for a successful business correspondence and professional communication. First year syllabus includes the following units: History and development of tourism, Work organisation in tourism sector, Hospitality (Types of accommodation, Hotel facilities, Staffing and internal organisation, Reservation systems and check-in procedure); Restaurants and gastronomy, Travel and transportation (Air travel, Travel by sea and river, Land travel); and Economy and finance (Money matters; Financial transactions; Financial terms).
GERMAN LANGUAGE I, II
Students attend beginner/intermediate or advanced classes depending on their previous knowledge. At the lower of the two levels students go through basic grammar structures. Units consist of dialogues and textual narratives that are relevant for job positions in tourism: dialogues in a hotel and hotel description, description of the most popular tourist destination in Croatia, transport and transport connections, giving information of the best route to a particular destination, etc. At the upper level topics are adequate for future managers in tourism: organisation and commerce of different companies, business communication, participation in business meetings and congresses, demand and supply on the market, tourist offer in Germany. Grammatical structures are revised and reinforced; also, new and more complex structures are added.
ITALIAN LANGUAGE I, II
The units in the course book focus on general language. The classes, starting with the basic language structures, include didactic materials that are based on understanding and communicating in Italian. During their first year, students will be introduced to the lexical and grammatical structures that will help them grasp and produce their own materials. Students are divided into groups based on their previous knowledge, or according to results of the placement test.
Physical Education (P.E.) I, II
The emphasis of this class is on the importance and purpose of physical exercise for human health. Through implementation of various kinesiological activities we influence development of functional-motor skills and build positive relationship with fitness activities in everyday life. The classes include general warm-up exercises, stretching, aerobic, dance forms, elements of sports gymnastics, elements of marshal arts, sport games, etc.
